Hitachi and Living PlanIT to Deliver Smart City Platform in Copenhagen

Living PlanIT announced at the Clinton Global Initiative today that it is working with Hitachi to deliver the City Data Market for Copenhagen, a recognized leader in smart city programs. This innovative platform, based on Living PlanIT's PlanIT Urban Operating System, further delivers on Copenhagen's commitment to bring economic, social, and environmental improvements and sustainability to the city.

Supported by the CLEAN ( consortium and the Capitol Region, Copenhagen´s initiative exemplifies the necessary coordination between government, technology and services required to properly plan and retrofit cities with solutions to meet their complex needs.

This "first of its kind" city platform will help consolidate data from the City of Copenhagen and the Capital Region and from businesses operating in or providing services to this area, creating a foundation for a unified urban data platform. Blending external data and forming a data marketplace, based on private and public data, the platform will foster the growth of applications to improve the quality of life for citizens. Businesses including retailers, property developers and managers, transportation and parking, insurance companies and independent software vendors will also benefit and be able to participate in the City Data Market.

Social Impact

Citizens of Copenhagen will have access to applications provided by Hitachi and many other developers that can provide new information services to them leveraging the data in the Marketplace. For example, 2 of the initial pilot applications will provide information about citizen's GHG footprint related to their transportation patterns and energy usage in their homes. The platform's access to crime and other demographic information can be used to improve the safety and quality of life in the city.

Environmental Impact

In pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2025, developers in Copenhagen can use this platform to deliver applications leveraging sensor data to monitor energy, air quality and traffic conditions, allowing the city to improve the use of critical resources and creating a cleaner living environment.

Economic Impact

In addition to social and environment benefits, the platform will create financial opportunities for new smart phone and tablet applications and new data services. Over time as large amounts of data are collected and analyzed new business opportunities will be identified and new services launched. Through a common data platform, city functions will work together to share insights to improve utilities, infrastructure and transportation.

Commenting, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen said,

"In Copenhagen, we are at the forefront when it comes to creating sustainable, high-tech solutions. The new Big Data platform is expected to provide citizens and businesses access to information, which among other things, can create new technological solutions. For instance developing applications to save energy and increase mobility for companies and citizens. Innovative solutions can also help foster growth and create jobs in Copenhagen."

SVP of Social Innovation Business for Hitachi Consulting, Hans Lindeman said,

"Hitachi Consulting is proud to be leading the delivery of the platform on this journey with such an innovative and forward-looking city. We believe that the combination of public and private data in a city-wide Big Data digital infrastructure will transform urban planning and provide benefits to businesses, improve the safety, wellbeing and comfort of citizens, and enhance the efficiency of the City of Copenhagen."

CEO of Living PlanIT, Steve Lewis said,

"The Copenhagen project is a notable example of bringing city services, data and applications together enabled by a common platform to help providers, citizens and visitors optimize critical resources, improve the quality of their lives and experience of the city. Copenhagen's leadership will become a key reference for further innovation and adoption by cities in the years to come. We are proud to be announcing our role in the project at the Clinton Global Initiative, given the relevance of this ground breaking collaboration to smart city deployment strategies.

We are also delighted to continue to strengthen our collaboration with Hitachi Consulting in Copenhagen and other smart city initiatives. We look forward to working in partnership with Hitachi as they leverage their expertise in delivering our UOS to other Smart Cities and bring to life for others, the benefits of Copenhagen's ambitious and admirable innovation and investment."
